Hello. On October 25 at 4 pm, I bought two tickets online for the movie Terrifier 3. When I arrived at AMC, which is located in Naperville, a manager asked for my ID at the registration desk. He stated that this was an AMC policy and I had to show him my ID. I want to note that no one else, neither the people who passed before me nor those after me, were asked for presentation of their identity card. I found this peculiar.
I informed him that never in a year since I began visiting this AMC was I asked for an identity card. As I didn't have it with me, I enquired if it was possible to receive a refund. He informed me that I could do it online. I had difficulty understanding how to go about it and approached another AMC employee for assistance. She told me that she could process my refund at the cash desk. I thanked her and proceeded to the counter. After receiving my order number, she mentioned that the refund would be done via card. I explained that I didn't have my card with me and asked if I could receive cash instead. She said she would check with a manager. She subsequently informed me that it was not possible to give me cash and proceeded to hand me a gift card, which I didn't need.
The manager then intervened and informed me that it was not possible for me to get a refund at the cash desk for tickets purchased online. I tried explaining to him that I had requested the employee for guidance since the website was confusing to me. The employee had told me that my refund could be processed at the cash desk and handed me a gift card without asking if it was what I wanted. Had she mentioned upfront that I would be receiving a gift card and not cash or card credit, I would have told her that a gift card wasn't acceptable to me.
The manager on duty on October 25 insisted that it was entirely my fault and that no refund was possible. I told him that I wasn't comfortable leaving without my money and that this approach was unfair. I reiterated that I needed clarity from his staff. She simply gave me a gift card without asking my preference for refund mode. If she had explained that cash refunds aren't possible at the cash desk, I would have sought assistance from someone else for the online refund process.
Subsequently, I tried to discuss my concerns with the girl who had initially tried to help me, but the manager told me not to talk to her. He threatened to call the police if I didn't leave. I said I didn't mind him calling them. After about 15 minutes waiting for the police to arrive, I noticed that during that time they hadn't asked any other customer for their ID at the entrance.
Upon their arrival, the police expressed that this case was not within their jurisdiction. They also noted that the employee and manager's actions were incorrect, suggesting there had been a misunderstanding. They agreed that the AMC staff should have been more helpful, or at least clearer in their instructions. It was not the staff's place to decide how clients receive their refunds. They suggested I contact AMC directly through their website and ensured that they would follow up on my situation. They reassured me that I would most likely receive my money back, possibly via a check.
They advised me to leave the premises for now and get in touch with AMC. Upon any other day, I could revisit this AMC location.
I hope you fully grasp the situation I encountered. I request a refund, as a gift card is not a suitable solution for me.
I can't help but feel this was a case of discrimination due to my nationality and religion. Why was I the only one asked for an ID? Not even teenagers or older individuals were asked.
It was very disappointing to experience such improper treatment from AMC staff.

We arrived there on time to watch a movie. My wife forgot her ID but she does have a driver's license picture on her phone.
We showed them, but they said they couldn't let her in without a physical ID. I can understand that the ID is required, but you guys don't scan or anything. You just looked and let us go. It's the same thing if I show them on my phone.
I asked for a one-time exemption, but they didn't let us go.
We drove 45 minutes to get there and another 45 minutes to go back, just wasting all our time. We were 5 people altogether and because just one person didn't have a physical ID with her, we all had to go back.

The website doesn't work and there's no customer service at all. When you call customer service, you expect to speak to an actual live agent who has the ability to solve the problem.
I have tried to solve this at the cinema, but they don't have the authority to fix it. Employ people; it's not all about profit for the shareholders.

As I try to renew my monthly membership, the website only allows renewal of a lower tier (Premiere) membership, not the tier I wanted. Nobody at the theater can help, and I was told I had to do it online.
Yet the online website is so buggy, it does not allow you to fix it. This company needs to stop hiding behind technology. They have more employees working at the theaters than actual moviegoers and are bleeding money. Things need to change or they too will not survive.
Talk to and communicate with your customers, provide customer service. Tread lightly and cautiously.
